Comment

The Katanga Cross, also referred to as Baluba Cross, was cast by pouring copper into sand moulds. Widely used as currency: 3 pieces would buy a goat, 3-5 a male slave and 5-10 a female slave.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1961 Katanga 1 Franc coin is that it features a unique design that reflects the region's rich cultural heritage. The obverse side of the coin depicts a stylized image of a traditional African mask, while the reverse side features a rendition of the Congolese coat of arms. This design was created by the renowned Belgian engraver, Joséphine Beaux, who was known for her work on various coins and banknotes throughout Africa during the mid-20th century.
