Comment
The 1840s through to the 1860s was a time of active experimentation in British coinage, with many new designs and innovations introduced; the Florin represented an effort to 'decimalise', to simplify the overly complex system of interlocking denominations within the British numismatic series (an effort which had been suggested as early as 1682). Being worth 2 Shillings, ten Florins equaled one Pound, a step in the right direction, and in 1847 Wyon and Dyce were tasked with designing this new denomination from the ground up.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern 1 Florin - Victoria (Pattern) 1848 from United Kingdom is that it was designed by William Wyon, a renowned engraver and designer at the Royal Mint. Wyon's design features a young Queen Victoria, crowned and robed, surrounded by a wreath of flowers and leaves. The coin's obverse also includes the Latin inscription "Victoria D:G: Britanniarum Regina F:D:", which translates to "Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith". This coin is considered a rare and valuable collector's item, with only 800 pieces minted in 1848, making it a sought-after addition to any numismatic collection.
