Comment

The standard weight of these coins was 4/11 troy ounce (174.5 grains). This issue was known as the 'Godless' Florin since there was no 'D.G.' or Dei Gratia (meaning 'by the Grace of God'). The denomination of one tenth of a pound was an early nod to a decimal currency but it would be more than 120 years before British coinage finally went decimal. ESC#802

Interesting fact

The 1 Florin - Victoria (1st portrait; 'Godless' type) coin from the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, made of Silver (.925) and weighing 11.31g, is interesting because it was minted during a time of religious controversy. The coin's design did not include the traditional motto "Dei Gratia" (By the Grace of God), which had been featured on British coins for centuries. This led to criticism from some religious leaders and earned the coin the nickname "Godless Florin." Despite the controversy, the coin remained in circulation and is now a sought-after collector's item.
