There is some uncertainty about this coin's date. While Heritage Auctions and NGC list this coin's date as 1517, a similar coin appeared at Haljak Auction with the date listed as 1533 (the type without the halo). It seems unlikely Riga would strike two similar coins that many years apart, especially considering there were other types minted between those dates, so the two coins were most likely struck within a similar time-frame. Comparing the two examples, 1533 is the most probable date: the 1 is the small tick after the inscription, the 5 is crude enough to appear like a 1, the 7 is actually a crude 3, and the 3 is the end squiggle.Interesting fact
