Comment

There is some uncertainty about this coin's date. While Heritage Auctions and NGC list this coin's date as 1517, a similar coin appeared at Haljak Auction with the date listed as 1533 (the type without the halo). It seems unlikely Riga would strike two similar coins that many years apart, especially considering there were other types minted between those dates, so the two coins were most likely struck within a similar time-frame. Comparing the two examples, 1533 is the most probable date: the 1 is the small tick after the inscription, the 5 is crude enough to appear like a 1, the 7 is actually a crude 3, and the 3 is the end squiggle.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a wavy shield, which is a unique design element that sets it apart from other coins of the time. The wavy shield is believed to represent the waves of the Baltic Sea, which was an important trade route for the Livonian Order. This design element adds to the coin's historical and cultural significance, making it a valuable piece for collectors and historians.
