Comment
R. C. Bell in his "Commercial Coins 1787-1804" describes this as "probably the finest farthing piece of the whole series". The Monk's tower was built as a protection against the Vikings and was also where Malcolm Canmore, as King of Scotland, paid homage to William the Conqueror in 1071. Approximately 10,000 struck but difficult to find nice examples nowadays. The token was designed by Menzies and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Willets.
Although growing flax and weaving linen was once commonplace in Scotland the industry has now completely disappeared.
The Monk's Tower (corner of Tay Street and Canal Street) was demolished about 1810.
