Comment

J. Pidcock was the proprietor of the Exeter 'Change Menagerie and importer of foreign animals. The business later passed to Gilbert Pidcock and the tickets issued by both men were trade tickets advertising the menagerie and passed for small change in circulation. The lion should really be a lioness. Pidcock's lioness lost her cub and was given a puppy to rear and suckle in place of her own offspring.

Interesting fact

The Token 1 Farthing coin from 1801 is interesting because it was issued during a time when there was a severe shortage of small denomination coins in circulation, leading to the use of private tokens like this one as a substitute for official currency.
