Comment

Krause catalog lists type KM#253 from 1701 to 1726. This type has been splited into two different pages due to the obvious change in the design of the obverse (coat of arms) that occurred in the year 1720.

       1701-1719 (1st type)                    1720-1726 (2nd type)

Varieties:

For coins from 1701 to 1719 there are different options depending on the location of the value, mintmark and assayer's initial:

1701: Mintmark, value and assayer's initial in obverse (Type 1)

1703: Mintmark, value and assayer's initial in obverse (Type 1) and reverse

1704, 1705 & 1706: Mintmark, value and assayer's initial in reverse

Interesting fact

The 1 Escudo coin from Spain, minted during the reign of Philip V (1701-1719) at the Seville mint, features a unique design element - a cross on the reverse side. This cross was added to the coin's design to symbolize the Catholic Church's influence and power during that time. The coin's design also includes the coat of arms of Spain and the mint mark, making it a valuable collector's item for numismatists interested in Spanish history and coinage.
