Comment
Charles IV (12/11/1748-19/01/1819) was the son of Charles III and Marie-Amélie of Saxony. He married Marie-Louise of Parma (1751-1819) in 1765. He was dominated by his wife and his first minister, Manuel Godoy. He was forced to ally himself with revolutionary and then imperial France. The Spanish fleet was decimated at Trafalgar (1805). Napoleon I had his eye on Spain and forced Charles IV, then his eldest son, Ferdinand VII, to abdicate in favor of Joseph. Charles retired first to Compiègne, then to Marseille, before settling in Rome where he died.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Escudo - Charles IV 1788-1807 coin from Spain is that it was minted during a time of great economic and political change in the country. The coin was introduced in 1788, just a few years after Spain had declared war on Great Britain in 1779, and it was minted until 1807, the year that Spain's monarch, Charles IV, abdicated the throne. During this time, Spain was facing significant economic challenges, including a large national debt and a decline in the value of its currency. Despite these challenges, the 1 Escudo coin remained a popular and widely used denomination, and it continues to be a sought-after collector's item today.
