Interesting fact
The 1 Escudo coin from 1915-1916 was designed by the artist José de Almada Negreiros, who was a prominent figure in the Portuguese modernist movement. The coin features a portrait of King Manuel II on one side and an image of the Portuguese coat of arms on the other. Almada Negreiros' design was chosen as part of a national competition, and it was produced in limited quantities due to the outbreak of World War I. As a result, the coin is now considered a rare and valuable collector's item.
