Julius Echternach of Mespelbrunn, * 1545 in Mespelbrunn, was elected prince-Bishop of Würzburg in 1573. His attempts to climb the Mainz Erzbischofsstuhl failed against it. He is considered to be (again) founder of the University of Würzburg 1582, as a great builder of churches and schools and as rounder operator of the Counter-Reformation in the Bishopric of Würzburg. Unwilling Protestants were forced to emigrate, the foundation of the Catholic League 1609 by the Bishop supported. Accused of an anticatholic pamphlet of Weekly Witch Burning, Julius Echternach could be rehabilitated in modern research. He died on September 13, 1617.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1 Ducat - Julius Echter of Mespelbrunn ND (1590-1595) coin is that it features a unique design element - a small shield with the Echter family crest, which was added to the coin's reverse side to signify the coin's issuance by Julius Echter, the Bishop of Würzburg. This distinctive feature sets the coin apart from other coins of the same denomination and time period, making it a sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
