The Pala Empire, which issued the 1 Drachm coin , was a powerful dynasty that ruled over a large part of the Indian subcontinent from the 8th to the 12th century. During their reign, they promoted Buddhism and supported the arts, leading to a flourishing of Buddhist culture and learning. In fact, the Pala Empire was responsible for the establishment of the famous University of Nalanda, which was one of the oldest and most renowned centers of higher learning in ancient India.
