Monaco's first gold coin, then worth the equivalent of the French louis d'or (see link below). As the French coin had four crowned Ls (Louis) surrounded by four fleurs-de-lis, Honoré II adopted the same design, replacing the Ls with Hs (Honoré).
Later, on other coins featuring a similar motif, the Princes of Monaco replaced the lilies with rockets, the symbol featured on the Grimaldi coat of arms. This type of motif appeared for the last time on the 50 francs Rainier III of 1974.
The Cabinet des Médailles in Paris holds a 1648 and a 1649 pistole from the collection of Louis XIV, probably given to Mazarin for the King by Honoré II.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1 Doppia (Pistole) coin from Monaco is that it was minted during the reign of Honoré II, who was the first sovereign prince of Monaco to issue his own coins. This coin, made of gold (.986) and weighing 6.64g, was part of a series of coins minted during his reign (1648-1650) to promote trade and commerce in the principality.
