This is the last issue of the Singapore Mint's Lunar Second Series, and the first of the smallest gold coin released as legal tender. The carded one dollar gold coin design was continued into the Lunar Third Series, with the final coin released in 2016 when the series was concluded. No further one dollar gold denomination was issued for the Lunar Fourth Series.
The 2003 Lunar Goat was struck in various metal which included copper-nickel, silver and gold. Gold coins were issued in $1, $5, $250 and $500 denominations. Silver coins were issued in $2, $10 and $25 while the sole copper-nickel coin was in $10 denomination.
The coin was first released on the 3rd January 2003 with an issue price of S$38.35. All were packaged in a credit-card-sized red-colour hard plastic card, as shown below. The specifications on the card listed the expected mintage as 8,000. However actual mintage released by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) was just 5,362 coins.
