Comment

Minted at the Hong Kong Mint, and was in use from 1866 to 1868. The coins featured the same value and likeness to the Mexican silver dollars already in circulation in Hong Kong, but the Chinese did not receive the Hong Kong silver dollars well, and as a result of the poor reception of the coin as well as the continued debasement of the coins, the Hong Kong silver dollars ceased to be produced after 1868. In turn, the Hong Kong Mint closed down, and the machinery used to strike the coins were sold to the newly established Japan Mint in Osaka, Japan.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1866-1868 Hong Kong silver dollar coin is that it was the first coin to feature a portrait of Queen Victoria, making it a unique and historically significant piece in the history of Hong Kong's currency.
