The Namibian dollar was introduced in 1990 as the official currency of Namibia, replacing the South African rand. The Pattern 1 Dollar (Trial strike) 1990 coin was minted in copper-nickel and weighs 12.0 grams. It features the national emblem of Namibia, the Welwitschia mirabilis, on the obverse side, and the Namibian coat of arms on the reverse side. The coin was designed by the South African sculptor and coin designer, Coert Steynberg.
