These were the only US coins ever to be demonetized (to force usage of the Morgan dollar, which had a slightly lower silver content). However, the Coinage Act of 1965 re-monetized it via section 102, which makes all coins and currency of the United States legal tender without limit.1875

The Trade Dollar was a dollar coin minted by the United States from 1873 to 1885. It was designed to compete with the Mexican peso in the Asian trade market. The coin was made of silver and copper, weighing 27.22 grams, and had a diameter of 38.1 millimeters. Despite its intended use in international trade, the coin was not widely accepted and was eventually discontinued. Today, the Trade Dollar is a sought-after collector's item, with some rare versions selling for thousands of dollars.
