The Negro National League was formed in 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri in response to African American baseball players being banned from the major leagues. Other leagues formed across the country. The leagues changed not only the game of baseball, but also the United States.Surcharges in the amount of $10 for each silver dollar sold were authorized to be paid to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for educational and outreach programs and exhibits.
The year 2020, when the legislation passed, marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Negro National League. Special $1 silver coins feature a privy mark on the obverse, underneath the pitcher’s raised right knee. The anniversary is represented by “100,” with the stylized diamond shape alluding to a baseball diamond.
