Comment
Unusual among kiwi, tokoeka are sometimes active during the daytime. On Rakiura they are often spotted by visitors and can sometimes be seen on the beach foraging for food. Tokoeka protect each other by living in family units, with offspring staying as helpers to their parents for up to seven years, sharing the task of incubating their siblings before they hatch. The combined population numbers for the three tokoeka taxa make it the most numerous kiwi species, with over 30,000 birds in the wild.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, known as the "4th Portrait - Tokoeka Kiwi." This portrait was designed by New Zealand artist, Natalie Lete, and it depicts the Queen with a kiwi perched on her hand, symbolizing the country's national bird. The use of a non-traditional design like this is a departure from the typical depictions of the Queen on coins, making it a standout piece for collectors.
