-The National War Memorial was the result of a competition launched in 1925, which was open to subjects from all over the British Empire. A total of 127 proposals were submitted by participants from Canada, France, England, Belgium, Scotland, Trinidad and the United States. English sculptor Vernon March, who had already created other monuments for Canada, was chosen.-When Vernon March died suddenly during the construction of the Monument, his brothers and sister took over and completed the work.
-The Monument was unveiled by King George VI in 1939 as a tribute to those who had served the country in the First World War. Two further unveiling ceremonies have taken place: in 1982, when the dates of the Second World War and the Korean War were added, and then in 2014, when those of the South African War and the Afghanistan mission were added.
-Each year on November 11th, during the Remembrance Day ceremony, the entire country turns its attention to the Monument and observes a minute's silence to remember Canada's wartime sacrifices.
-The Monument's symbolic scope has broadened since 1939, when it was unveiled specifically to honour Canadians who served in the First World War. In subsequent conflicts, it has come to commemorate the wartime sacrifices of all members of Canada's armed forces.
Interesting fact
The interesting fact about this coin is that it has a unique reverse design that features a poppy, a symbol of remembrance and hope, surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves, which is a common motif in Canadian coinage. The design is meant to commemorate the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers who have served in military conflicts throughout history.
