Comment
With the issuance of the 2019 Special Edition Proof Numismatic Dollar, the Royal Canadian Mint recognizes, honours and celebrates the exceptional history of the Métis Nation. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Métis National Council President Clément Chartier, Manitoba Métis Federation President David Chartrand and Mr. Norman Fleury for their guidance and collaboration on this story of two peoples with an inseparable past. This year's Special Edition Proof Dollar highlights the contribution of Louis Riel (1844-1885), and the Métis Nation, to Canadian history. A champion of Métis rights and an agent of change, Louis Riel was born 175 years ago in St. Boniface, in the province he later founded. It's now 150 years since the National Committee he led drew up the first list of rights for the Métis Nation - a declaration that set out land claims and language rights as prerequisites for Manitoba's entry into Confederation.
This piece, which highlights Louis Riel's place in history, is a celebration of Métis cultural heritage and resilience. Today, the struggles of the past have not disappeared: they continue to echo from one generation to the next. There is hope, however, in the recognition of Canada's troubled past and the sacrifices of a founding people.
