Comment
When war broke out in Korea in 1950, most countries were still recovering from the Second World War. However, Canada mobilized almost 30,000 members of its land, sea and air forces to defend the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea. It's a small fraction of the total international force, but relative to its population, Canada's contribution is greater than that of most other countries. On July 27, 1953, thanks to the commitment of Allied forces to the war, officials signed the armistice that put an end to three years of hostilities in Korea. This silver one-dollar coin is an almost identical reproduction of the original Korea Medal awarded to all members of the Commonwealth contingents at the end of the war. A vibrant tribute to Canada's veterans.
Special features
- The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as she appeared on the original medal and on Canadian coins in circulation at the time, in her 1953 portrait by Mary Gillick.
- The coin is a virtually faithful reproduction of the Canadian Korea Medal, superbly chased in 99.99% fine silver.
- The five modern finishing techniques used give this famous medal a special lustre and a new definition.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a padded burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a personalized protective box.
As a tribute to the Canadians who wrote an important chapter in Korea's history, the Royal Canadian Mint will donate $10 from the sale of each coin to the Korean War Veterans' Charities.
