In the 17th and 18th centuries, French coins were essential to trade in New France. But many of them ended up at the bottom of the sea, becoming sought-after treasures for adventurers centuries later. Such was the fate, for example, of the louis d'or mirliton of 1723 and the louis d'or aux lunettes of 1726.The louis d'or aux deux "L", issued between 1720 and 1723, is said to have made the crossing safely. Historians believe that the 1721 vintage actually circulated in the colony. They point to a letter dated July 1, 1721, which refers to the shipment of new coins to Philippe de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, then governor of the colony.
To date, no archaeological evidence has been found to support this assertion. The true fate of the 1721 louis d'or on this side of the Atlantic remains as mysterious as that of its sunken successors. Here's a well-hidden treasure waiting to be discovered, like the last issue in this series of rare reproductions.
Interesting fact
The 1 Dollar - Elizabeth II (Gold Louis) 2008 coin from Canada is unique because it features a rare portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin's design is based on a 19th-century Canadian gold coin called the "Gold Louis," which was originally minted in 1866. The use of this design on the 2008 coin was a nod to Canada's rich numismatic history and added an element of nostalgia to the coin's appeal. Additionally, the coin's high gold content and limited mintage make it a valuable and sought-after collector's item.
