Comment
James Cook was master of the HMS Pembroke during the Seven Years' War and took part in the siege of Louisbourg and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. From 1762 to 1768, Captain Cook was the first to map, on a large scale and with scientific accuracy, the coastal waters of Newfoundland.
George Vancouver was a midshipman aboard HMS Resolution during James Cook's second voyage and a member of the crew of Discovery on the third voyage. In 1792, he returned to Nootka Sound and mapped the coast of British Columbia, including the island that bears his name.
Interesting fact
The obverse of the coin features a unique design element, a cameo portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. This is the first time a cameo portrait of the Queen has been used on a Canadian coin.
