Specimen set 2020
Canada is home to some 80,000 species, many of which face an uncertain future: habitat loss and human activity are putting our natural heritage at risk. There is hope, however, thanks to the actions of organizations, volunteers and ordinary citizens. The future of our endangered species and habitats is in our hands, and this year's specimen set reminds us that conservation is a long-term task.
The one-dollar coin in the 2020 specimen set features the black-footed ferret. Extinct from our prairies for decades, this animal has been the focus of recovery efforts led by volunteers and partners - including the Toronto Zoo, Calgary Zoo, Parks Canada and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - working together to give this species a second chance in Canada.
SIX PIECES REUNITED. The set includes six coins: a special edition of the one-dollar coin and five circulation coins featuring the 2020 designs (2 dollars, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents and 5 cents). All six coins are presented in a booklet with a removable plaque.
Special features
NEW THEME. This year's specimen set highlights wildlife conservation by featuring one of Canada's endangered animals on the specimen dollar.
A RARE. The set includes a rare 50-cent coin with specimen finish - one you won't find anywhere else.
A DIFFERENT SPECIES. Since 2004, the specimen dollar has been adorned with a different bird every year. The black-footed ferret becomes the first mammal to appear on this dollar - another exclusive feature of the set.
EXCLUSIVE FINISH All six coins in the set are enhanced by a specimen finish, a combination of glossy, frosted relief on a finely striated field. We are the only mint in the world to offer an annual set with this exclusive finish.
A REDUCED EDITION. This specimen set is produced in a limited edition.
"I really appreciate the Toronto Zoo's collaboration on this project. Through various conservation and awareness initiatives, and through the actions we take on a daily basis, we can make a difference and reduce our ecological footprint."
