Comment

The Royal Australian Mint as part of its exclusive subscription 'Mint Legends' members loyalty program released both specimen and proof versions (Fine Silver .999) of this coin. They were not available through regular channels. It received very little publicity among general collectors. This coin was the first in this series.
The reverse design on this coin graced the obverse of the first Australian decimal coins introduced in 1966 preceding its first appearance on British coins by two years.
The Machin likeness was replaced in 1985 by a Raphael Maklouf portrait. Known as the "young portrait" Machin's representation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is for may Australians the most recognisable.

The coins were housed encapsulated, in a black leatherette, hinged-lid presentation case, accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity and protected by a cardboard shipper.

Interesting fact

The Machin effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the 2012 Australian 1 Dollar Silver Gem-Proof coin was designed by sculptor Arnold Machin and has been used on British coinage since 1964, making it one of the longest-running coin designs in history.
