Comment

This 1oz silver proof coin celebrates the kākā as a taonga (treasure) of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Highlights

  • Legal tender New Zealand coin dated 2021
  • Minted from 0.999 silver
  • Incorporates beautiful artwork by NZ artist Ben Timmins
  • First-ever commemorative coin to celebrate the kākā, an endemic New Zealand parrot
  • Presented in an elegant case with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

Design

This coin features an illustration of the kākā painted by New Zealand artist Ben Timmins. In the background two ferns crown the bird, as a symbol of protection and guardianship. The ferns are engraved, and the background colour treated to give greater depth to the imagery and highlight the kākā painting.

Interesting fact

The 1 Dollar - Elizabeth II (4th Portrait - Kaka; Silver Proof) 2021 coin has a unique feature - it has a micro-engraved design of a kakapo, a nocturnal parrot native to New Zealand, on the reverse side. This adds an extra layer of detail and interest to the coin's design.
