Comment
Towards the end of 1605, William Janzoon sailed from Bantam in Java, in search of trade opportunities on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. The Master of the small Dutch ship Duyfken (little Dove) sailed south-east, charting part of the coast of Nova Guinea. By March 1606 the expedition had crossed the Arafura Sea, sighting what was assumed to be a southern extension of the island. In fact Janzoon had discovered the northern coast of a vast southern continent, marking the beginning of Australia's recorded history. More precisely he made landfall on the western shore of Cape York, near the future site of the town of Weipa. Janzoon and his crew, who became the first documented Europeans to encounter Aborigines, literally put Australia on the map by charting 320 kilometres of the coast.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique design that showcases a map of Australia, which is not commonly seen on coins. The map is pad printed onto the silver coin, giving it a distinctive look and adding to its collectibility.
