Those on board the first AIF convoy left Australia excited to facing Europe and the main theatre of war. Many were disappointed by their transfer to Egypt; they believed they had been sidelined and would miss out on the fighting. Training in Mena Camp did little to curb their frustration, but on 1 April 1915 they received news that they were bound for the front.
