This New Zealand definitive dollar coin was issued in 1999 in BU and Proof sets with the new obverse featuring Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The first coins with the fourth portrait to enter circulation were dated 2000. These coins have been minted at various different Mints over the years.Interesting fact
The 1999-2023 New Zealand $1 coin featuring Elizabeth II (4th Portrait) was the first coin to be introduced with a new security feature called "optically variable ink" or "color-shifting ink." This feature causes the coin's color to change from bronze to purple when viewed at different angles, making it difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. This was a significant innovation in coin technology and helped to prevent counterfeiting.
