Comment

This crown-sized dollar coin commemorates the Kakapo bird, also called the owl parrot, which is a species of large, flightless, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot of the super-family Strigopoidea, endemic to New Zealand. It has finely blotched yellow-green plumage, a distinct facial disc, a large grey beak, short legs, large feet, and relatively short wings and tail.

The coin was issued in the usual square plastic Jewel Case. (35,000 Copies)

It was also included in the annual 7 coin Uncirculated Mint Set. (18,000 Copies)

A Sterling Silver version of the coin was also released (See link)

Interesting fact

The Kakapo Bird featured on the coin is a critically endangered species of parrot native to New Zealand. It is the world's only nocturnal parrot and has a lifespan of up to 120 years, making it one of the longest-living birds in the world.
