Comment
CNI divides the Saint Savinus types into two periods:- those with the S lying down are ascribed to the early Autonomous Period (1220-1352). CNI XIII, p.322-323
- those with the S upright, and more modern font (as in the photos) to a later Autonomous period (1500-1513). CNI XIII, p.332.
The font used on the coin shown suggests the later date range (although attributed by the auction house to the earlier one).
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the Renaissance period, a time of great cultural and artistic flourishing in Europe. The coin's design, featuring the image of a saint, is a reflection of the strong religious influence of the time. Additionally, the use of billon, a copper and silver alloy, was a common practice during this period, as it was a more affordable alternative to pure silver or gold.
