Comment

A visit to New Zealand and Australia by King George VI, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret was proposed for 1949. As the dates for the tour grew near, it became apparent that the King’s ill health would not allow it to take place.

200,020 copies had already been prepared by the Royal Mint, London to commemorate the visit. Of these, 190,000 were shipped to New Zealand, while the New Zealand Government made arrangements for the balance to be distributed for collectors: 4020 in the UK, 1000 in Canada and 5000 in the USA.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1949 New Zealand 1 Crown - George VI (Royal Visit) coin is that it was minted to commemorate King George VI's visit to New Zealand in 1949, which was a significant event in the country's history. The coin's design features an image of the King on the obverse side and a depiction of the New Zealand coat of arms on the reverse side. The coin was minted in a limited quantity, making it a valuable collector's item for numismatists today.
