Comment

Coin 5 of 5: The 19th and 20th centuries
are represented by a 19th century Manx lifeboat going to the aid of a ship in distress. A portrait of Sir William Hillary is inset. The lifeboat movement had its beginnings in the Isle of Man. Sir William Hillary founded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the world's premier life-saving organisation for shipwrecked mariners, and in 1832 he built the tower of Refuge which is such a prominent landmark in Douglas Bay.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1979 Isle of Man 1 Crown coin is that it features a unique design on its reverse side, showcasing the Tynwald Hill, which is a historic landmark on the island and the site of the annual Tynwald Day ceremony, where the island's laws are proclaimed.
