Robert Falcon Scott, born on June 6, 1868 near Plymouth and died on March 29, 1912 on the Ross Gap in Antarctica, was a Royal Navy officer and British polar explorer, considered one of the leading figures of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, for which he led two expeditions: the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). During the latter, Scott led a group of five to the South Pole on January 17, 1912, where they discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had preceded them by four weeks.
