RMS Rangitane (callsign GBWX) was a 16,712-ton ship owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company (NZSC). Delivered in 1929, she was a diesel-powered sister ship to the RMS Rangitata and RMS Rangitiki. She left Auckland en route to Britain, but in the early morning of 27 November 1940, Rangitane was intercepted 300 miles east of New Zealand by the German raiders Komet and Orion and their support ship Kulmerland. 296 surviving passengers and crew were taken prisoner. RMS Rangitane was the largest Allied merchant ship to be sunk by a German ship during World War II. This is the report of the RMS Rangitane (1) built in 1929. In 1949, the Rangitane (2) was built and incorporated into the fleet of the New Zealand Shipping Company (NZSC) and sold to the Chinese tycoon Tung Chao-Young (CY Tung) of the Orient Overseas Line, being scrapped in 1976 in Taiwan.
