Comment

Glenn Miller amazed everyone when he volunteered for the United States Army at 38. A fine trombonist and an excellent arranger, he was too old for the draft and the band he had formed in 1937 was riding high on the success of hits like 'Moonlight Serenade' and 'In the Mood' (1939). But when America went to war, he determined to put a little more spring into the feet of our marching men and a little more joy in their hearts. It turned out to be a lot more spring and a lot more joy. He formed the 42-piece Army Air Force Band, and his broadcasts in the USA (1943) and England (1944) had an incalculable effect on morale. Eager to widen his audience, he took off for recently liberated Paris on 15th December 1944 in near-freezing conditions in a single-engined C-64 Norseman, and vanished without trace over the English Channel. His signature (clarinet lead over four sax- phones) conjures the spirit of the age more emotively than any other sound.
