Bernard Law Montgomery was one of the Allies' most successful and longest serving field generals. A veteran of World War I, he was in command of the 3rd Division during the Battle of France and was among the last to be taken off at Dunkirk in 1940. Appointed commander of the exhausted Eighth Army in 1942, he rallied them to a notable victory against Rommel at El Alamein in October. He defeated Rommel again in 1943 and drove the Axis forces back to Tunis. He played a vital role in the invasions of Sicily and Italy and, in command of the 21st Army Group for the Normandy invasion, he courted the main thrust of the German counter-offensive to free US armoured divisions for the drive across France. Resolute and durable, his concern for his men was legendary. He was a difficult man to command and he has often been accused of over- caution, but his refusal to begin battle prematurely deliverd much-needed victory and avoided costly defeat.
