Comment
Godfrid
Godfrid was a Danish Viking leader in late ninth century who in 881 had undertaken extensive military raid into Rhine area. During this raid his Viking bands plundered many villages and towns, including cities of Cologne and Bonn.
Despite being common in popular culture, there is no evidence that Vikings ever wore helmets with horns. This stereotype comes from Scandinavian artists in the 19th century.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the coin is that it commemorates the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Cologne, which took place in 1274. The battle was a significant event in the history of the Holy Roman Empire and the Isle of Man, and the coin's design reflects this history with an image of King Edward I, who led the English army to victory in the battle.
