Comment

For the second year running, the Gibralar Government issued a series of Crowns commemorating some of the famous classical figures of ancient mythology.

Arethusa was a wood nymph, with whom the God Orpheus fell madly in love. He pursued Arethusa as fas as Sicily, where she sought refuge. Here she was turned into a spring by the Goddess Artemis.

Interesting fact

The 1998 Arethusa Silver Proof 1 Crown coin from Gibraltar features a unique design, with the obverse bearing an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse showcases a representation of the mythical nymph Arethusa, after whom the coin is named. This coin is considered rare and highly sought after by collectors, with only 10,000 minted.
