Necessity coinage countermarked during the Paraguayan War (1864-70) between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.
Paraguayans numismatics are aware of the existence of a small die wich various coins from other countries were remarked.

The name of the subdivision was changed from "Céntimos" to "Centavos" in 1874.
