The 1 Centime coin from Haiti was designed by French engraver Jean-Baptiste Mercier, who also designed coins for France and other countries. The coin features a portrait of Haiti's first emperor, Faustin Soulouque, who ruled the country from 1847 to 1859. Soulouque was a former slave who rose to power through the military and eventually declared himself emperor, taking the title of "Faustin I." The coin was minted during his reign and bears his image, making it a unique piece of Haitian history.
