The 1 Centavo coin from Guatemala was designed by the Guatemalan artist and sculptor, José de Jesús Méndez Vargas. He was known for his work in creating sculptures and monuments that reflected Guatemalan culture and history. The coin features the national emblem of Guatemala on one side and the denomination on the other. Méndez Vargas' design was chosen through a competition held by the Central Bank of Guatemala in 1964.
