During WW2, Newfoundland cents were made in Ottawa instead of England to avoid risking transatlantic shipping.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1 Cent - George VI 1938-1947 coin from Newfoundland is that it was the first coin to feature a portrait of King George VI, who was the King of Canada during World War II. This coin was also the last coin to be issued by the Dominion of Newfoundland before it became the 10th province of Canada in 1949.
