James Duncan, a hardware merchant in Charlottetown issued the first Canadian decimal piece, the "cent" (100 to the Spanish dollar) of 1855. Competing with other halfpenny tokens (150 to the Spanish dollar), it is doubtful whether they were readily accepted.
Interesting fact
The Token 1 Cent (Fisheries and Agriculture) 1855 from Prince Edward Island is interesting because it was used as a substitute for the official Canadian currency, which was scarce at the time, and it was made of copper, which was a common material for tokens in the 19th century.
