Comment
Hartill says Su Shi designed some coins of Zhezong, but does not specify which era he designed coins for. Because Sima Guang would have designed the coins for the Yuanyou era, and because Su Shi was banished in 1094, it is likely Su Shi designed the coins for the Shaosheng era.DocBaoFeet
Interesting fact
The Shaosheng (Yuanbao; Running script) coin was used during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) and was one of the first coins to feature a Chinese character on one side and a blank space on the other. This design was a departure from earlier coins that had a square hole in the center. The use of a character on one side and a blank space on the other made it easier for people to recognize and use the coins, and it became a standard design feature for Chinese coins for centuries to come.
