The Guangxu (Tongbao; Boo-nan) coin was the first coin to feature the portrait of the emperor, Guangxu, on the obverse side, which was a departure from the traditional Chinese coinage design that featured symbols or characters. This design change was a result of the influence of Western culture and the desire to modernize China's currency.
