The Chongning Yuanbao coin, which was minted during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 CE), was the first coin in China to feature a square hole in the center. This unique design was meant to prevent people from threading the coins together and wearing them as jewelry, as was a common practice at the time. The square hole also made it easier to stack the coins and store them in a secure manner.
