The 1 Carlino coin was minted during the reign of Grand Master Jean de Vallette, who was a prominent figure in Maltese history. He was a French knight who became the 44th Grand Master of the Order of Saint John (also known as the Knights Hospitaller) in 1557 and ruled Malta until his death in 1568. The coin features an image of de Vallette on one side and the coat of arms of the Order of Saint John on the other.
