Since its separation from Colombia in 1903, Panama has used the United States Dollar. These coins have the same specifications as the . Due to the rising price of silver in the 1960s, these coins were never issued for general circulation and were sold with a premium above face value.

According to the Royal British Mint, 200 thousand 1967-dated coins were minted. The ultimate fate of these coins is currently unknown.

More than 200,000 of the 1966 coins were melted down in 1971 to provide silver for coins.
