Comment
The chakra is an ancient symbol of Indian origin, and has many meanings in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. It is represented as a discus formed by several blades, sometimes simply represented as dots, placed around the central hub. Along with the tri, it is one of two symbols representing the Chakri dynasty. There are a lot of varieties of chakra found on pot duang from the Ayutthaya Kingdom through to the Rattanakosin period pot duang coinage.
The unalom is a mythical symbol surrounded by lotus pedals forming a frame. Although its exact meaning is unknown, there are two popular interpretations: it might represent the tuft of hair between the eyebrows of Buddha, or it could be a representation of the conch shell containing the ashes of Thongdi, the father of Somdet Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok Maharat (Rama I). The unalom became the Royal Emblem of Rama I, and can be found on the pot duang coins produced after his coronation in 1785, and until his death in 1809.
